5G Sub-$5 Realities

The 5G capex cycle peaked in 2022-23 with the big-three US carriers (T, VZ, TMUS) completing their core rollouts. Sub-$5 5G plays are now mostly working through the lull between rollout phases — some pivoting to private 5G enterprise deployments, some to fixed wireless access (FWA), and some toward 6G R&D positioning.

  • Carrier capex cycle: AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile spending sets demand for most sub-$5 equipment vendors. Capex guidance updates move the group.
  • Private 5G: enterprise CBRS-band deployments are a growth pocket. Names exposed to industrial / manufacturing private 5G outperform.
  • Fixed Wireless Access: FWA subscriber growth (T-Mobile and Verizon are leading) reads through to connected-device makers and CPE plays.
  • Open RAN traction: ORAN architecture wins (or losses) at carriers shift demand toward different vendor ecosystems.
  • BEAD funding: federal Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment program flows to fiber/wireless deployments — episodic catalyst.
  • 6G positioning: sub-$5 names trying to plant the flag in 6G R&D are essentially trading hope tickets — commercial 6G is 2030+.
