How to Read Reddit Mentions for Penny Stocks

Social-mention data tells you what retail attention is concentrated on. For sub-$5 stocks, retail attention IS the catalyst for many short-term moves — both up (momentum buying) and down (when the crowd loses interest). The same data is also a pump-and-dump leading indicator: a ticker that vaults from rank 50 to rank 3 in 24 hours on a stock with no fundamental catalyst is the classic pump setup.

What to weigh:

• Absolute mentions: total combined count across both subreddits this period.
• 24h delta: the more important signal — is attention surging or fading? Big positive deltas warrant the most attention (good or bad).
• Source: r/pennystocks (badge "r/p") is closer to the actual penny-stock audience; r/wallstreetbets (badge "WSB") brings broader (but noisier) retail attention.
• Price context: $0.50-$1 range mentions tend to be more speculative; $2-$5 mentions often have more fundamental basis.
• Catalyst check: is there actual news (8-K, earnings, FDA, contract) driving the buzz, or is the chatter untethered? Untethered chatter on sub-$1 stocks is the pump pattern.
