How Biotech Penny Stocks Trade

Biotech at the sub-$5 level is the most binary-event-driven corner of the penny universe. Most names are clinical-stage with no revenue; their value depends almost entirely on trial outcomes, FDA decisions, and partnership announcements. A successful Phase 2 readout can produce 300-1,000% moves overnight; a clinical hold or PDUFA delay can wipe out 70-90% in a session.

  • FDA calendar awareness: PDUFA dates, AdCom meetings, and trial-data readouts are scheduled events. Position into them carefully — both outcomes are real.
  • Cash runway = survival: burn rates dictate everything for clinical-stage names. A 12-month runway means a financing is imminent — check the 10-Q.
  • Dilution is constant: biotech penny stocks raise capital every 6-18 months. Recent S-1 / S-3 filings tell you what's coming.
  • Platform vs. asset: platform companies (multiple drug candidates from one technology) are more durable than single-asset stories.
  • Orphan and rare disease: some sub-$5 biotechs target orphan indications with smaller markets but faster approval paths. These are different risk profiles.
  • Partnership leverage: a Big Pharma licensing or co-development deal can revalue a sub-$5 biotech overnight. Press release headlines matter.
  • Halt risk: trial-readout days frequently include volatility halts; resumption prints can be 30-50% away from the halt price.
